April is the coolest month …

… NOT! Here in the Sunapee region of New Hampshire April messes with your head. TS was right. It’s already spring, technically, but the sky could still drop a foot of wet, heavy snow and it could still get cold enough to freeze any brave daffodils that were thinking of getting a head start on their lives.

In the academic calendar April is the harbinger. The bell tolls for thee. Final exams are so close you can hear them breathing. They have pretty bad breath as I recall.

More old photos to post. They may have nothing to do with the narrative but I guess I don’t care about that. Or maybe I do … else I wouldn’t mention it, right?

Or maybe, and this is closer to the truth, I don’t really have much of any narrative. Starting out with the weather is usually a bad sign. I returned yesterday from a trip to Connecticut to attend my best friend’s son’s bar mitzvah. My friend likes to remind me at least annually about my lapsed Judaic heritage, though his reminders have softened as we’ve both reached middle age. The ceremony was beautiful and his son did a wonderful job with all the Hebrew prayers as well as with his own speech, which was surprisingly thoughtful and well-written coming from the mind of a 13 year old boy.

The after party was spectacular. All the kids seemed to have a great time and my friend’s son did really well on gifts. He got some really great juggling clubs (5 of them- his goal is to juggle 5- he can do 4 now) and an iPod touch that he really wanted as well as a ton of money. Maybe half a ton. And now he’s a man. And a mensch! 😀

  1. I like the first and third photos. WHAT is the second one of?

I’d like to tell you C, but wouldn’t you like to guess first? Now that you’ve clued me in on its ambiguity, I wonder what people might THINK it is. Now I’M the curious one! 😀

  2. so, how do I friend you? or is that not something you do on WordPress, cause guess who totally has a blog on your “better” blogging site 😀

    Alicia

Is that LiveJournal you’re talking about? WordPress doesn’t have the Friends feature, it’s not really a social site and you meet others in the blogosphere by reading, liking, and commenting on their posts. Then they read yours and leave comments. It’s fun 😀

  3. CURIOUS? God, I’m effing scared. That middle photo is totally obscene. I saw it and immediately thought, “Is that some part of David’s anatomy?” I’m still not sure it isn’t. I’m pretty sure that photo could get you arrested. It’s like you planted a disgusting subliminal porn shot on your blog.

Oh, and I’m jealous of that’s boy-turned-man’s juggling clubs. You know I’ve always wanted to be a juggler of sorts.

Oh please Wendy, don’t be scared. I promise you that middle photo is TOTALLY UNOBSCENE. Barring my large intestine I would NEVER post a photo of any part of my anatomy other than what you might see if you drove by me in your car. I’m not that kind of guy. Honest!

I imagine that you and Buck each already can juggle 3 balls in the classic “cascade” fashion. My BFF (father of the bar mitzvah boy) taught me how to do this when we were kids. The clubs are a whole different deal, they have to flip over with each toss. No can do. 😀

  4. Ugh! I went back and studied it some more. It’s made me sick to my stomach.

NOW this is getting interesting!! Knowing it’s NOT part of my anatomy, or anybody else’s anatomy, let us continue in wild speculation!

  5. […] David (who totally grossed me out today by posting a truly vile photo of I-don’t-know-what) said over on Romi’s blog that brooches were only worn by teachers who wear school-issued […]

  6. On photo number 2, I was initially thinking craters of the moon or sand dunes from above. Then I read that they are your photos so I’m curious if you ever had an opportunity to fly over the Sahara and take photos. Mmmm?

My formal vote is filed as a close up of some form of plant life. Dried oak leaf, maybe?

Remember, the best way to make your half ton of money in to a ton of money is to get it changed in to pennies! (Yes, I worked this out. In fact, I learned a completely irrelevant side fact: dimes, quarters, and half dollars weigh exactly proportional to their value. I.e. $100 weighs the same in dimes, quarters, or half dollars (2268 grams))

Hi Keath! (I really need to catch up on your blog, thanks for visiting 😀 ) Your first guess was getting warm! And as a reward for your startling revelation on the weight of coinage, and the suspicion that there is no more suspense to be wrung out of this post (if there ever WAS any- I think disgust is all that’s been registered so far …), I now reveal the subject of photo #2: Beach sand and a rock. The tidal flow arranged the sand in that organic looking way. Thanks for guessing!

  7. A bar mitzvah seems like a great place for me to meet a man…they’re not ALL just 13 (or dads) are they??? (and no offense on the dad-call, hahaha 😉 …)

No offense taken. I would not recommend fishing for men at a bar mitzvah unless you plan on either converting to Judaism or having in-laws that hate you because you’re a shikse. Not that you won’t find some good quality men, it’s just that some Jewish folks are a little bigoted in that regard. Not me- I married a shikse, but my parents didn’t really care about that.

  8. I can’t imagine what that might be, and I would have to admit that completely abstract art is unintelligible to me, except maybe Miró’s. However 😀 I don’t understand “figurative” art any better, except…… ..when it is strongly abstracted, as for example in cave drawings and in early Gothic and Egyptian art (and a few things by El Greco and many by Goya and some by Hodler..). That is why I liked David’s photo called “Imagine you are at an art gallery”, because it seemed to be the photo of THE WAY OUT.

I don’t really understand it either cantueso. Figurative or abstract or whatever. But I can feel it when my eye likes it, and that’s what I register, not the theoretical flapdoodle. From your other writing I picture you as a wearer of strong eyeglasses and much less visually oriented than me. I guess you can leave the art appreciation to 100swallows. 😉 I hardly ever go to art museums either, but El Greco was one of the first painters whose work “registered” in my child-mind- the painting of Toledo … those clouds.

  9. I’m guessing #2 is beach sand and a rock.

Why, that’s a SWELL ‘guess’ vermonter! I wish there was a consolation prize in this game 😀

  10. no flies on me.

So what is that then? A cicada?

  11. Great atmosphere (even if some were frightened), David. Don’t fret about the weather, I was in Connecticut yesterday and it was actually sunny and warm. I know! I thought I was in mystery photo #2.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up (being Northerners we know better) but if a nice day is only a couple hundred miles South it’s only a matter of time until we get one.

    August is my best bet.

Thank you B&G! By “atmosphere” do you mean “mixture of gases”? 😀

I’m not worried about the weather, as I see the sun getting higher and higher in the sky. I got one of my bicycles cleaned up and ready to ride. I went about campus today and yesterday without my coat, so I’m gonna bet on May.

  12. I’d have to say photo #2 is some kind of sand pic. But then on a second closer look it could be some kind of cloth material. Something they would use on Project Runway.

Yupperdoody! Sand it is. First look, best look. Not cloth. But now that I think about it, it might be fun to be the guy gluing the grains of sand on the supermodel’s body for that next great LOOK.

  13. Yupperdoody!! That’s the fourth new word I’ve heard this week. I like it. I may start using it around the house.

    Yupperdoody!! Suppers ready!!

I think I first heard that word in a high school play. I think it was “Absolutely Murder”. The kid who played the drunken doctor may have ad libbed it. But it’s a great word. Glad you like it joan!

  14. “Oh, ma…not YUPPERdoody again…”

    “Wanna go out?”
“Can’t. I got Yupper duty again.”
    “That’s too bad.”

    Yeah, yupper doody stinks. 😉

  15. > By “atmosphere” do you mean “mixture of gases”?
No! Don’t be silly. That assmosphere.

    > I’m gonna bet on May.
Ugh, there you are, getting your hopes up.

Very punny. Temps in the 60s today!! 😀

  16. I have already told you that I do not wear any glasses. However, I can see a beautiful thing from a mile. You wouldn’t agree that an Egyptian cat, drawn or sculpted, or some Greek vase drawings are Beauty itself?! Whereas Chagall, my favourite painter, is not after the beautiful line, and that shows. He is after colours, and that is more subjective, since it is also considerably less rational.

Yes, I know; I have also read the 100 swallows. He simply knows the whole Prado and part of the Louvre by heart.

In art I am the typical consumer with his ubiquitous IMHO.

I was picturing you squinting at that little bot-detector password thingy while typing in the distorted letterforms … I can see a beautiful thing from about 15 feet (or 4 meters). I would rather see the actual Egyptian cat. And maybe you should see about GETTING some eyeglasses! (joke)

I enjoy reading your HOs. 😉

  17. Hahaha…I love that I knew what that term was because I heard it used on a Seinfeld episode once…I love when TV teaches me stuff!!! 😉

Romi, you say yupperdoody was on Seinfeld? Are you sure you’re not thinking of yada yada yada?

  18. Um…really nice photos.

Reading these hilarious comments makes me feel like I’ve come late to the party, and everyone’s already drunk and throwing up on their shoes.

Since you’re late do you mind cleaning up the puke?

  19. David: “I’m not worried about the weather, as I see the sun getting higher and higher in the sky.”

Okay, David, you’ve got me casually cautiously optimistic. Although it poured like an unscrewed salt shaker this morning, I will officially call this day and yesterday ‘sorta maybe kinda bordering on nice.’

Thanks for cleaning the puke, Moonbeam. The warmth was making it stink.

    Yeah, thanks moonbeam 😀

Casual cautious optimism- a new goal in life. The weekend turned out a whole lot better than it was supposed to.

  20. This is another reason why I want a dog so badly. I can take him with me to parties to clean up the puke. Everyone would love him for this, and say things like, “Nice doggie.” It would make me extremely popular at sporting events too.

Oh god moonbeam! LO >gag< L!! Love me, love my puke-cleaner-upper dog!

  21. The second picture reminds me of an elephant butt. That’s the first thought I had when I saw it.

That’s AWESOME Red!! That is like the best guess EVER 😀 I never saw that and I’ve looked at that photo for many years. Now that you’ve put the elephant butt in my mind I totally see it!

    Thanks Red!! 😀

  22. *whew!* I was hoping that answer wouldnt offend you. I almost didnt say anything, in fear that it would. That picture, as lovely as it is, (and it really is) could be a number of things .. an elephant butt for one. Im sure it’s not, but ya know …. And no, I dont think an elephant butt is lovely, but .. shoot! Im shutting up now! 🙂

I was happy that you saw something new (to me) in the photo so I’m glad you wrote it! I wrote what it really was in a response to Keath’s comment.

And I think you’ll find it difficult to offend me. But please keep trying 😀

  23. Did you know that Lewis Carroll would have liked to be a photographer? A Spanish newspaper published a series of his photos. If you have time, you should look.

    http://tinyurl.com/5r66mr

Thanks for that link cantueso. It lead me to a wider Googling that was quite fruitful. I think that Carroll was, in fact, a photographer. 🙂

  24. I should have added that to see more you have to click on that first one. (Or is it maybe always that way?)

I’m not sure what ‘first one’ means … but went to the link you provided and then did some Googling on my own …
