Separated at Birth

Wendy (Life with Buck) recently posted an adorable photo of herself as a child. I was immediately reminded of Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird, and our friend Moonbeam McQueen confirmed this. So here’s the proof:

Wendy, I will be happy to remove this post if you wish, but you really ought to give your long lost sister, Mary Badham, a call don’t you think?

  1. No, don’t remove it! That is insane! And hilarious. I love it. I’m gonna send my older brother and sister over here to see it. 🙂

  2. Don’t take it down! That Haircut was rampant! –>

  3. I love it. That’s amazing. It probably really is Wendy and she’s just too humble to tell us about it. Mary Badham was just her stage name. I love that movie. It still stands as one of my favorites. I’ve read the book a few times too.

  4. That’s awesome. Wendy, I had that same haircut too. Now if I could only find the picture. LOL. Awesome. Thanks Dave for posting this.

  5. I. Had. That. Haircut. Also.

    Dammit!

  6. In my day it was called a “pixie cut.” NOT by ME though, Mr. Man. Noooo way.

  7. Fortunately that haircut was declared unholy by Vatican 2.5 in January of 1967. Pope Paul was allowed to continue wearing it however, under his pope-hat.

  8. It’s so adorable! From the stories she’s told, I picture Wendy acting like Scout too.

I looked up current pictures of Mary Badham, to see if the resemblance carried over into adulthood. I think Wendy will be glad to know that it didn’t.

  9. Wow, that’s eerie.

Excommunication is surely headed my mother’s way. She made me get that haircut in 1987.

moonbeammcqueen, I’m going to have nightmares about the frantically joyful Mary Badham.

  10. OH YEAH. Hummmpphh. Thanks for the warning Ceridwen! I only looked at moonbeam’s picture find for a couple of seconds, so I think I’ll be spared the nightmares.

But it does raise the topic of how wrong the title of this post is. Clearly Mary Badham was born WAY before Wendy! So they were “Separated at Birth” by about a decade. Not that we need to know that exactly or anything …

However, from Wendy’s spirited postings, I think we can assume that she shares the same plucky spirit of the character of “Scout” Finch. Remember how she chided that poor kid at the dinner table when he covered his mashed potatoes with syrup? “What in the sam hill are you doin!?” she asked. Atticus admonished her for her bluntness. The IMDB entry on this triple Oscar winner is surprisingly empty of detail. This picture was released on xmas day of 1962. That was our last merry xmas.

  11. It makes me think of Wendy dressed up like a ham.

  12. I called it a pixie cut too. Um, I think I was in 4th grade.

MB – you really need to offer up warnings for some of your links. Good I wasn’t drinking anything or I would have spit it out all over my keyboard when I saw that picture. 🙂

  13. LOL You guys are freaking killing me! I can’t stop laughing long enough to be clever, you’re all too funny:
“…declared unholy by Vatican 2.5 in January of 1967. Pope Paul was allowed to continue wearing it however, under his pope-hat” ?

“It makes me think of Wendy dressed up like a ham” ?

“…Good I wasn’t drinking anything or I would have spit it out all over my keyboard…”

But seriously MB, that photo of Mary Badham doing a bad Catherine O’Hara impersonation was scary indeed.

  14. I forgot to say I love that movie, and the book. It’s a wonderful book to read in the summer, and the humor has held up even now. (And by “even now” I don’t mean now that we’ve been exposed to that link from MB) 🙂

  15. Hahaha…what a spitting image! And moonbeam, that current pic of scout was very disturbing indeed; it’s the maniacal “I’ve lost my marbles so I’m laughing” face…shudder…

  16. @ Romi: I thought it was more of a maniacal, “I’ve lost my acting career” face!

  17. LOL…oh wait, it’s probably that one 😉

  18. How about just “I’ve lost my FACE and this one’s rubber!”

  19. wendy, that is so funny. mom thought so also. where can i get a “life with buck” shirt? i would so wear that.

  20. Does she have a brother named Jem?
